The Bow Tie partners, Charles B. Moss, Jr. and Ben Moss, are, respectively, the third and fourth generations of a family whose century-old business interests are centered in the real estate and entertainment industries.
Bow Tie History
The business began in 1900 when Benjamin S. Moss emigrated from Austria to the United States and founded B.S. Moss Enterprises, initially a chain of store front nickelodeons. B.S. Moss Enterprises became a New York area vaudeville circuit presenting such acclaimed acts as George Burns and Gracie Allen, Harry Houdini and Milton Berle. Under the direction of B. S. Moss’ son, Charles B. Moss, and grandson, Charles B. Moss, Jr., the theaters grew into the largest independently owned and operated motion picture theater circuit in Metro New York.
Throughout the 1970’s and 1980’s, Charles B. Moss, Jr. produced feature films distributed by major studios. He also produced Broadway plays in theaters he developed, owned and operated.
During the 1990’s, the Moss family built and operated the largest independent network of resort radio stations in Colorado and California. Presenting major market news, talk and information programming, the stations served Aspen, Vail, Steamboat Springs and other Colorado markets, as well as the Napa and Sonoma Valleys.
The Moss family business enterprise was expanded in 1998 when Charles B. Moss, Jr. and his son, Ben, formed Bow Tie Partners and shortly thereafter, Bow Tie Cinemas – the latest business venture to continue the traditions established by Ben Moss’s great-grandfather over 100 years ago.
The traditions and customs established by Ben’s great-grandfather over 100 years ago are best exemplified by the two reasons for the choice of the name Bow Tie Partners:
An American icon, a Manhattan landmark and Bow Tie Partners’ flagship property, the Bow Tie Building occupies the full city blockfront between 44th and 45th Streets on Broadway at the center of Times Square’s famous “Bow Tie”, known as such because the crossing of Broadway and Seventh Avenue, when viewed from above, forms a bow tie shape at the “crossroads of the world.”
All that — and the simple fact that Ben’s grandfather, Charles B. Moss, Sr., always wore bow ties!
